MAKER

A Costume Maker interprets the costume designs to create paper patterns and constructs the garment using fabric sourced by the

Costume Supervisor.

​

As a Costume Maker, I have experience of making for theatre shows and personal commissions. My skills range mainly within ladies-making including pattern drafting, hand sewing, machine sewing, tailoring techniques, as well as dyeing and breaking down.

What I’ve Worked On

January - March 2020

CINDERELLA SERVANT DRESS

As a personal project at university, I made a copy of the Cinderella servant from the Disney Live Action Film.

During this process I developed many making skills including:
- Dyeing fabric in a dye vat
- Surface decoration through hand painting
- Hand gathering and smocking
- Box pleats
- Pattern drafting

I also developed my skills as a maker in a fitting and communicating with a model.

April 2019

PAH-LA

Pah-La is set in Tibet and China based on true stories during the 2008 Lhasa riots, it examines the future of non-violence.

  • Designer: Lily Arnold

During this project I worked on Alterations. The schools I gained included:

  • Adapting tailored jackets

  • Sewing braid onto cuffs

  • Took part in a workshop about creating a burn effect on fabric.

January - February 2019

PEOPLE OF THE ABYSS

People of the Abyss was a physical theatre piece based in the slums of London in 1899.

​

  • Designer: Arabella Ockenden

I was responsible for making one jacket and one pair of trousers. The skills I developed during this project were:

​

  • Communication between the team of five makers

  • Tailoring skills: Welt pockets, Jet Pockets, Working with Canvas, Pad Stitching

  • Fabric Sampling

VICTORIAN PROJECT

As part of a project at university I made a Victorian Bodice and Corset.

During this project I developed many making skills including:

  • Application of Lace over another fabric

  • Fabric Sampling

  • Working with boning

  • Pattern drafting for the Victorian figure

  • Piping

  • Historical research into female Victorian fashions
